Calligraphy – The Art of Beautiful Writing is an excellent introduction to Calligraphy. By following the simple, easy to understand exercises, you will be writing beautifully and finding pleasure in your new found skill after only a few lessons.
Materials for the beginning calligrapher are listed and described, including pens, paper, binder and inks. There is information on pen nibs and widths, and advice on cleaning pen nibs.
The exercises are contained in three sections. Calligraphy I – The Chancery Cursive Hand, Calligraphy II – Illumination and Bookhand, and Calligraphy III – Old English and Blackletter. Each section examines the creation of full alphabets, including variances for vowels, capitals, minuscules, numbers and punctuation, flourishes, illumination, and ligatures. The format follows Ludovico degli Arrighi's idea of learning each hand by family.
